M's vaunted offense, surprisingly quiet
Seattle led AL in production for regular season, shut out in Game 1
SEATTLE -- The Seattle Mariners surprised the baseball world this season by leading the American League in offense.  They surprised themselves Tuesday when that offense output vanished.  Seattle mustered only six hits in a 5-0 loss to Cleveland in Game 1 of the American League Division Series, completely stymied by the raw power of Cleveland starter Bartolo Colon.  "Colon threw the ball really well," Seattle manager Lou Piniella said.  "We Didn't really create too many opportunities to score runs."  The Mariners - who used good base running and clutch hitting to fuel their offense all year - weren't able to do either in Game 1.  It was only the fourth time Seattle was shut out all season.  Of Seattle's six hits, three came with two outs in an inning, severely limiting what Piniella and the M's could do on the basepaths.  "We've got to find a way to get guys on base," M's center fielder Mike Cameron said. "We need to get them on base to get them back in the mix."  The Mariners' small-ball style simply seemed out of sync against Colon.  In the first inning, Ichiro Suzuki led off with a single, which seemed to rattle Colon, as he threw to first base numerous times to keep Ichiro close.  But the Mariners never put Ichiro in motion and the next two hitters, Mark McLemore and Bret Boone, struck out to end an early threat.  After Ichiro singled in the third, the Indians were ready, executing a picture perfect pitchout to catch the speedy lead-off man in a rundown.  "He was on base, we just didn't do much," Piniella said.  Ichiro was a bright spot for the Mariners, going 3 for 4 with a double in his first playoff appearance.  Colon powered through the M's early on, striking out five in the first three innings.  When Seattle finally did make contact, they were shots right at an Indians fielder.  "Colon is the story," M's catcher Dan Wilson said.  "We couldn't get any offense generated."  The middle of the order, usually the heart and soul of the team, was noticeably absent in Game 1, as Seattle's 2-6 hitters went a combined 1 for 19 with 10 strikeouts.  "There's no need to panic," said Cameron, who was 1 for 4 with three strikeouts.  "Things can turn around just as fast as they did today."
