Griffey jerked the ball down the left-field line and it hugged the wall after it got to the corner, slipping past left-fielder Jim Eisenreich. Griffey was rounding third by the time Eisenreich retrived the ball and scored standing up for his 11th home run of the year. Brian Holman, 8-5, gave up seven hits in eight innings for the victory. He struck out seven and did not walk a batter. Mike Schooler pitched the ninth for his 16th save. Kansas City starter Kevin Appier, 2-3, was spotted a 2-1 run when the Royals scored in the first and second innings, but gave up consecutive singles to Jeff Schaefer, Harold Reynolds and Henry Cotto, allowing the Mariners to tie it 2-2 in the third. He got two outs in the fifth before Griffey, who was hitless in his eight previous at bats, provided the tie-breaker. His first came in the Kingdome on May 21, 1989, against the New York Yankees. Cotto put Seattle ahead 1-0 in the first. He singled with one out and stole second, taking third when the ball came out of shortstop Kurt Stillwell's glove and rolled into left field. Cotto scored on Alvin Davis' sacrifice fly.
