49ers find the answer in Atlanta
ATLANTA (AP) -- "We knew the defense had to come up with the big plays and we made a few," Dana McLemore said Sunday after the San Francisco 49ers defeated the Atlanta Falcons 35-17.  It was more than a few, It was seven, to be exact - six turnovers and a blocked punt.  The 49ers, reeling off their sixth victory in a row and their ninth straight on the road, clinched home field advantage for the upcoming National Football League playoffs.  It was the first time in the last six games that the 49ers have been able to win at Fulton County Stadium.  The 49ers have won 17 of their last 19 regular season road games, and 23 out of 26.  Two of the four road losses in the last 27 games have come at Atlanta -- 28-24 last year on the "Hail Mary" pass from Steve Bartkowski to Billy Johnson and 24-17 in 1981.  McLemore scored on a 54-yard interception return and Gary Johnson scooped up a fumble and raced 33 yards for another score by the alert 49ers defense.  "We wer lucky the defense picked up some big plays," said Joe Montana, who threw two touchdown passes for an otherwise sputtering San Francisco attack that had three turnovers of its own.  "If we (offense) continue to play the way we are, we're not going to go anywhere in the playoffs," Montana said. "We have got to play better."  Johnson scored for only the third time in a 10-year career, giving the 49ers a 21-10 halftime lead.  "I just saw it laying there, and when I picked up I saw nothing but touchdown." said Johnson.  "This team wins in different ways every week," said Keena Turner, who set up Roger Craig's 5-yard touchdown with an 8-yard interception return to the Atlanta 9.  "Today we won with lots of individuals."  Montana's scoring passes came in the first half -- 64 yards to Freddie Solomon and 6 yards to Dwight Clark -- as the National Conference West champions lifted their record to 13-1, marking only the 14th time in National Football League history a team has won 13 or more regular season games.  The Falcons fell to 3-11 for the year, losing their eighth in a row -- one shy of the club record.  Montana also had one touchdown pass called back by a penalty and saw another possible score fall through Earl Cooper's hands in the end zone.  Atlanta took and early 3-0 lead on Mick Luckhurst's 32-yard field goal and got its touchdowns on a 2-yard run by Gerald Riggs and a 48-yard pass from Mike Moroski to Alfred Jackson, who had a career-high 11 receptions for 193 yards.  Jackson's 193 receiving yards was a single-game club record for the Falcons.  Riggs rushed for 133 yards on 30 attempts and Moroski completed 22 of 43 for 289 yards, but was the victim of five turnovers -- three interceptions and two fumbles.  Riggs had the other fumble near the end of the first half.  The Falcons opened the game with a 47-yard pass from Moroski to Jackson to set up the Luckhurst field goal after 3:26 had elapsed.  It didn't take Montana long to give the 49ers the lead for good, moving 84 yards in four plays, capped by the 64-yard TD pass to Solomon.  Solomon, who sailed into the open when defender Kenny Johnson fell, caught the ball at the Atlanta 37.  The victory was the first in Atlanta for the 49ers since 1977 and enabled them to score a season sweep over the Falcons for the first time since 1974.  San Francisco wrapped up its third NFC West crown in four years with a 24-17 victory over Tampa Bay last week.
